Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Full Stack Developer to design, develop and scale innovative software solutions supporting next-generation smart shopping cart technology. This role combines backend engineering, frontend development and systems integration to deliver advanced retail automation capabilities powered by computer vision and connected devices.

You will contribute to the development of software across three core areas: Core Backend, Retailer Enablement and Retailer Tooling. The primary focus will be Retailer Tooling, including theft prevention workflows, real-time camera capabilities, cart tracking, human-in-the-loop (HITL) functionality, shift calendars, analytics and reporting.

Working closely with Software Engineers, Product Managers, Product Designers and Data Scientists, you will build scalable, reliable applications that enable retailers to deploy, monitor and manage smart shopping carts across multiple store locations. This is an opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges and contribute to technology that is transforming the grocery shopping experience.

About the Team

The engineering team develops smart shopping cart technology powered by deep learning and computer vision to deliver a seamless, cashier less shopping experience. Its plug-and-play solutions enable retailers to introduce advanced shopping capabilities without extensive store renovations or significant infrastructure investments.

The engineering organization develops the backend systems, integrations and operational tools required to deploy, manage and operate smart carts at scale.

The three interconnected engineering areas include:

- Core Backend: Backend services, infrastructure, developer tooling, engineering patterns and core business logic.
- Retailer Enablement: Integrations with retailer systems, retailer onboarding and the technical processes required to launch smart carts in stores.
- Retailer Tooling: Operational applications and workflows for smart cart management, including theft prevention, real-time cameras, cart tracking, human-in-the-loop functionality, shift calendars, analytics and reporting.

In this role, you will primarily contribute to Retailer Tooling while collaborating across these engineering areas to ensure smart carts can be deployed and operated effectively across retail environments.

What You’ll Own:

- Design, develop and maintain full-stack applications and features supporting smart shopping cart technology.
- Build and enhance retailer-facing and internal operational tools for managing, monitoring and maintaining fleets of smart carts.
- Develop backend services, APIs and application logic using Java and related technologies.
- Build responsive, maintainable frontend applications using JavaScript and React.
- Develop workflows and tooling that help detect, investigate and mitigate potential theft using computer vision systems and cart data.
- Implement and enhance real-time camera capabilities, cart tracking and monitoring functionality.
- Build and maintain human-in-the-loop (HITL) workflows, shift calendars, analytics dashboards and reporting features.
- Develop scalable abstractions and self-service tools that simplify retailer onboarding and the deployment of smart carts in new stores.
- Contribute to backend infrastructure, developer tooling, reusable engineering patterns and core business logic.
- Integrate applications with retailer systems, APIs and other enterprise platforms to support seamless operations.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Product Designers, Data Scientists and other engineers to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Participate in technical design discussions and implement solutions that balance scalability, performance, reliability and maintainability.
- Write clean, well-tested and maintainable code, following established engineering standards and development best practices.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues, improve application reliability and optimize system performance.
- Contribute to code reviews, automated testing, deployment processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work independently across multiple projects, manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality solutions in a fast-paced engineering environment.

What We’re Looking For:

- 10+ years of professional software development experience, preferably in a full-stack engineering environment.
- Strong proficiency in Java and JavaScript, particularly React.
- Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining both backend services and frontend applications.
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles, application architecture, APIs, data flows and system integration.
- Experience building scalable, reliable and maintainable software applications.
- Ability to translate product and business requirements into practical technical solutions.
- Experience troubleshooting complex application issues and improving performance, reliability and code quality.
- A strong sense of ownership, initiative and accountability, with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to balance rapid delivery with high-quality, maintainable and pragmatic solutions.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product Management, Design and Data Science.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where requirements evolve and engineers are expected to take initiative.

Strong Assets:

- Experience with Kotlin.
- Experience building enterprise-facing applications, internal tools or operational management platforms.
- Familiarity with human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems, computer vision or machine learning applications.
- Experience working with IoT platforms, connected devices or large-scale fleets of hardware systems.
- Experience developing real-time monitoring, tracking, analytics or reporting functionality.
- Background in retail technology, retail automation, loss prevention or point-of-sale integrations.
- Experience integrating software applications with third-party enterprise systems and retailer infrastructure.
- Strong React frontend development experience, including deploying applications into complex production environments.
- Experience building tools that automate workflows, improve operational efficiency and support large-scale deployments.
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and modern software delivery practices.
- Experience working across multiple engineering teams and technical domains to deliver end-to-end solutions.
