Position: Software Engineer – Internationalization & Localization (Backend-Focused)
Location: Remote (Canada – PST or EST time zones)
Job Term: Contract through end of year (strong likelihood of extension)
Posting Type: Open vacancy
What is the Opportunity?
We are looking for a backend-focused Software Engineer to join a Platform Localization & Internationalization team on a contract through the end of the year, with a strong chance of extension.
In this role, you’ll work on foundational platform systems that enable a large-scale consumer platform to operate correctly and seamlessly across countries, languages, currencies, and regions. The work directly impacts multiple product teams and plays a critical role in global expansion.
While localization roles are often frontend-heavy, this position is intentionally backend-oriented, with some full-stack exposure as needed.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain backend internationalization infrastructure using Ruby / Ruby on Rails.
- Develop locale-aware APIs supporting language, country, and regional behavior.
- Build backend services that support multiple currencies and exchange handling.
- Support time zones and regional date/time formats.
- Enable units of measurement differences (lbs. vs kg, miles vs km).
- Identify and refactor legacy code with US-only assumptions.
- Build reusable platform capabilities consumed by multiple product teams.
- Partner closely with frontend engineers, product teams, and platform stakeholders.
- Support global expansion initiatives across the platform.
- Contribute to architectural decisions impacting international scale.
- Occasionally support full-stack development using TypeScript, when required.
What We’re Looking For:
Must-Have Experience:
- Strong backend experience with Ruby / Ruby on Rails
- Solid understanding of APIs, data modeling, and distributed systems
- Experience building scalable, reusable platform or infrastructure services
- Comfort collaborating across multiple teams in a platform environment
Nice to Have:
- Experience with TypeScript and full-stack systems
- Exposure to internationalization, localization, or global product development
- Interest in cross-cutting platform challenges and global-scale architecture
